Custom Orthotics and Orthopaedic Shoes

A custom orthotic is a device, slipped into the insole of your shoe that is designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. Although they look like insoles, they are actually biomechanical medical appliances, which are custom made to correct specific foot imbalances. The body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait (walk) cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole and are made from precise imprints of your feet.

Some symptoms of poor foot mechanics can include any one of the following:

  • Localized foot pain

  • Bunions, hammer toes

  • Arch/heel pain

  • Leg/knee pain

  • Hip or back pain - even neck pain

The Toronto Spine & Sports Clinic can prescribe custom orthotics to
help correct your specific foot and body imbalance. You can help us by
discussing any nagging foot, leg, or back problems on your initial
consultation or next treatment visit.
The more you wear your custom orthotics the increase benefits
you will experience. If your daily activities vary and you are
constantly changing your footwear, then you should have a
second pair of custom orthotics designed for alternate activities.
(i.e. work safety shoes and running shoes)

Most shoes that have a removable insole will be compatible with your custom
orthotic. You just need to remove the insole that came with your shoe and
replace it with the custom orthotic. The Toronto Spine & Sports Clinic also
offers a specific line of footwear that will accommodate prescribed custom
orthotics.  If you are interested in sandals or clogs, you can have the prescribed
custom orthotic built right in.

They will help position your foot so you will be using the right
muscles at the right time, minimizing fatigue and allowing your
muscles to be used more efficiently.

The Toronto Spine & Sports Clinic prescribes orthotics to patients for various symptoms. Many medical conditions often stem from a biomechanical abnormality in a patient’s gait that can be treated with custom orthotics, some example are:

Achilles Tendonitis

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Metatarsalgia

Morton's Neuroma

Plantar Fasciitis

Runner's Knee

Sacroiliac Syndrome

Shin Splints
